Ukraine: EPP Group wants Cox/Kwasniewski mission to now focus on freeing Tymoshenko. Elmar Brok MEP

Following today’s meeting of the European Parliament’s Conference of Presidents, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Elmar Brok said on behalf of the EPP Group:

„The EPP Group in the European Parliament welcomes the decision of the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament to prolong the mission of Presidents Cox and Kwasniewski until 14 November and to strengthen their mandate. On the basis of their proposal on a partial pardon for Yulia Tymoshenko she should be allowed to leave the country to seek medical treatment in a hospital outside Ukraine.“

„Ms Tymoshenko has undertaken an important step of responsibility for her country. Now we hope the Ukrainian government makes use of this opportunity.“

„The EPP Group wants to enable the signing of the Association Agreement. Two of the three requirements for the agreement, the reform of the judiciary and the electoral law, are on the way to be solved within an acceptable timeframe. The question of selective justice could be solved in a fitting manner on the basis of the Cox-Kwasniewski proposals, with a view to the signing of the agreement.“
