European Parliament backs EU-Moldova association deal – Brok expresses his support for the European aspirations of Moldova

The European Parliament gave its consent to the EU-Moldova Association agreement, which includes a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA). Elmar Brok, Chairman of the EP-Foreign-Affairs-Committee, expressed his support underlining that the European Union will continue to assist Moldova: “The Moldovan people are looking for a democratic, European future of their country. Moldova has achieved tremendous progress on its European path signing in a record time the Association Agreement. This aims to achieve an unprecedented level of political association and economic integration.” Mr Brok expressed his satisfaction that so many MEPs backed the agreement – 535 votes in favour to 94, with 44 abstentions.

Brok added: “We are living in defining times both for the European Union and for Moldova. We have to face major common challenges such as security threats at our borders. Europe was the one to offer the first hand to help Moldovan exports and to try to secure the energy independence of the country.” Mr Brok said. “Europe stands for peace, freedom, economic and social progress, and for the equality of small and big countries. Europe stands for the rule of international law and against the use of force, contrary to what Russia does in Ukraine.”

Brok also stressed: „Russia needs to respect Moldova’s territorial integrity and the country’s choice to continue its pro-European path“.
