Press statement by MEP Elmar BROK on the pseudo elections in some parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions
On 2 November, the self-proclaimed authorities in some parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions (Ukraine) will organise pseudo presidential and parliamentary elections. The EU will not recognise these elections that would be conducted against Ukrainian law and therefore be illegitimate. Furthermore, such elections are in complete opposition with the letter and the spirit of the Minsk Protocol, and aim at derailing the peace process in the Donbass.
I have been informed that some Members of the European Parliament, including M. Béla Kovács, intend to observe these elections. If this is confirmed, let me be very clear: these members have received no mandate at all from any of European Parliament’s bodies to observe the elections or to speak on their behalf. Any comment they would make on the conduct or the results of these pseudo-elections shall not commit in any way the European Parliament and the European Union.
