Two years since the wrongful arrest of Julya Tymoschenko

Today, two years ago Julya Tymoschenko was wrongfully arrested, as stated by the European Court of Human Rights three months ago. She was finally convicted to seven years in prison after a dubious trial. ‚It is a clear case of selective justice and can not be accepted‘ sais Elmar Brok, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament. Two years after the arrest it is time to eliminate this example of selective justice and release Tymoschenke from prison.

Furthermore, the signing of the association agreement between the Ukraine and the European Union depends on a reform of the justice system, in particular the role of the General State Attorney, and a reform of the electoral law.

‚I am appalled by the the behaviour of the socialist delegation and the Hungarian MEP Zita Gurmai, who gained Tymoschenko’s trust under false pretenses and who gave inappropriate and amateurish assessments about Timoshenko’s state of health. I am also appalled by the acceptance of selective justice by the socialist MEP. This must be linked to the communist tradition her party.‘, said Elmar Brok.
