Statement Elmar Brok MEP from Kiev/Ukraine

Elmar Brok MEP (EPP, Germany), the Chairman of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, is currently in Kiev. He issued the following statement on the escalating violence this morning:

„I can confirm that snipers have started shooting at Maidan demonstrators, disrespecting the ceasefire agreement of last night. Given the numerous casualties they appear to be using live ammunition“.

„This demonstrates that targeted sanctions against those responsible for the violence are now more urgent than ever. Now is the time to agree and implement these sanctions as quickly as possible“.

„These sanctions are neither aimed at the Ukrainian people nor will they affect ordinary citizens of Ukraine. Instead, the EU must issue travel bans and start freezing the assets of those who contributed to the escalating and indiscriminate violence against peaceful demonstrators“.
